The Canyon King; or, A Price on His Head

· November 11, 1885

This issue contains the opening installments of two serials by Edward Willett. "A Price on His Head: A Tale of the Wahsatch Range" begins with prospector Gideon Gray reuniting with his wife Mary near Salt Lake City, only to have her killed by Mormon Danites pursuing her after she fled Elder Hynes's forced marriage. Gray rescues his young daughter Ida and flees to the mountains, vowing vengeance as a hunted outlaw. The second serial, "The Canyon King," shifts to Arizona where brothers Frank and Harry Ford traverse a barren desert plain toward the Colorado River, desperately seeking water. Frank attempts an engineering solution using reeds to extract moisture from the sand as their horses and supplies grow critically depleted.
