# Museum Catalog Note: Hotspur Hugh, Issue No. 303
This serialized dime novel, published by Beadle & Adams in December 1884, opens with "Hotspur Hugh." Luke Bloodrod, a mysterious, gun-nerved man of thirty, arrives in early territorial Oregon with Boatman Brittles via a harrowing descent of a river rapid. At Brittles's remote cabin on the Columbia, Bloodrod encounters the boatman's daughter Lona—described as a beautiful, intelligent woman whose eyes betray trouble—and Brimstone Jake, a rough associate. Subtle exchanged glances between Brittles and Jake suggest sinister purpose. Bloodrod follows Lona into the woods, where he discovers her in tense conversation with Basil St. Cyr, a French Hudson Bay Company man claiming past intimacy with her. Lona dismisses his advances coldly, identifying him as her enemy. The narrative establishes competing interests over Oregon Territory resources and alludes to tensions between American settlers ("Bostons"), British fur traders, and local Indigenous groups including the Molacks and Chinooks. Bloodrod emerges as a man with deliberate purpose, operating with calculated nerve amid frontier intrigue.
