The narrative follows Barton Keys, a fugitive branded outlaw after murdering rival Soule Ravelle and framing tutor Bradford Carr, who now enjoys honor at Brandt Plantation as Maud Brandt's betrothed. Keys, hiding in Rita's father's smuggling lugger anchored in Louisiana bayou, plots elaborate revenge: he will deliver a forged letter from Rita's pirate father to Carr, threatening to kidnap heiress Maud unless Carr abandons his position and bride forever. If Carr refuses, Keys threatens kidnapping, arson, and hanging. Rita agrees to disguise Keys thoroughly before his dawn departure by skiff with her spy Leon. The installment details Keys's backstory of gambling debts, seduction schemes, and criminal machinations, establishing the framework for his coastal vengeance campaign.
