Vol. XV, No. 183 (April 26, 1882). "Gilbert, the Guide; Lost in the Wilderness" by C. Dunning Clark begins a frontier adventure serial. Gilbert, a rugged borderman traveling by canoe through the Northwest Territory, meets Owasco, an Onondaga chief, who warns him that Wyandots are on the warpath after discovering a pipe-bowl marked with Catholic symbols. They encounter a mysterious, well-armed young woman in the forest who cryptically warns them of danger from the north—red-coated warriors and a great leader larger than Pontiac approaching. When hostile Indians appear, the woman directs them across the river to safety. From an island, Gilbert and Owasco witness Wyandots led by "the Horned Owl," a chief Gilbert recognizes as his sworn enemy, capturing a young Irishman named Pat O'Driscoll. The girl appears to hold significant influence over the war party.
