# Catalog Note

This dime novel by Edward Willett concerns Ben Blood, a hunter involved with Paul Roder's outlaw gang. When Ben refuses to participate in an attack on the kind Colonel Landry, he defects and warns the family to flee. Though Ben completes a panther skin for Landry's daughter Rose and attempts to leave the territory, Roder's gang captures and punishes him for betrayal. The narrative then shifts two years forward to a Texas settlement, where a gambling and whisky establishment operated by Charles St. Clair (alias "Fancy Charley" from the gang) serves as a social hub. The text breaks off mid-description of this scene. The story combines frontier action with themes of honor, betrayal, and frontier criminality in the context of early Texas settlement.
