# Red-Knife, The Chief; or, The Arrow-Maker of the Miamis
This serialized story by Edwin Emerson begins at Crumper's Station, a Kentucky frontier post. Herbert Thurston, a thoughtful young frontiersman, confides in Wapawah (Red-Knife), a skilled Wyandotte scout and warrior. Wapawah had been cast out by his tribe years earlier after freeing a captive girl. Thurston reveals his belief that a white captive Wapawah recently encountered among the Miami—an arrow-maker for the tribe—may be Richard Sedgewick, who disappeared on a scouting mission a year prior. Thurston proposes a rescue expedition; Wapawah agrees to depart within three days by land to avoid river patrols. Their conversation is interrupted by the arrival of Vinnie Sedgewick, a young woman with auburn hair and blue eyes, accompanied by a rather simple, staring man of twenty-one.
