# THE GRAY SCALP: THE BLACKFOOT BRAVE
This is a frontier adventure novel by Edward Willett featuring a nighttime attack on a fur-trading expedition. The story opens with Irish trapper Dennis Regan, experienced plainsman Pap Byers, and others in Captain George Benning's camp. When Blackfoot warriors stampede the horses through camp, chaos ensues. Despite initial confusion, the trappers defend themselves with disciplined rifle fire and force the attackers to retreat. Six men are killed, including expedition leader Mr. Robinette. His nineteen-year-old daughter Flora—beautiful and spirited—vanishes during the raid; trappers deduce Indians captured her. Benning exhibits unusual distress, revealing to Scottish agent Martin Laurie his deep concern for Flora, though Laurie claims Robinette intended her to marry him for her property and security. The narrative emphasizes frontier combat, character interaction, and sets up Flora's abduction as the central plot device.
