Beadle's Half Dime Library No. 893

· September 4, 1894

This issue of Beadle and Adams' weekly (Vol. XV, No. 98, September 4, 1894) features the beginning of "The Boss Countryman's Round-Up" by Dan Dunning.

The serial opens with Frank Thorpe arriving in Brookvale from New York, only to be arrested for Jack Harney's murder. A lynch mob quickly gathers, overwhelms the police chief, and prepares to hang Thorpe from a tree before the Town Hall. A mysterious stranger—later identified as Mr. Fox—intervenes with drawn revolvers, wounding the mob's leaders and securing Thorpe in the jail. The lynchers regroup and stage a midnight assault, hammering down the jail door. Inside, the stranger employs dynamite and gunfire, then traps the mob ascending a narrow spiral staircase with hidden wires. When the mob attempts to rush Carpenter's apartments where Thorpe has been hidden, a sheriff's posse arrives, routing the would-be lynchers and ending the attack.
