This Beadle and Adams weekly (No. 839, June 2, 1898) contains The Grim Lodges of Rag Alley; or, Citizen Rube of Number Seven, a Fourth Ward New York romance by Ben D. Halliday, a reporter and detective. The serial follows fifteen-year-old orphan Rube Rat-trap, a ragged resident of dilapidated Rag Alley, as he encounters a drunk sailor named Asa Frink. Frink seeks a room in Rube's boarding house (specifically the room below Rube's, occupied by the mysterious Solomon Sinn) and reveals knowledge of an old murder committed in the building twenty years prior—a killing never publicly reported, whose perpetrator escaped justice. The crime weighs heavily on Frink, who claims the ghost haunts him. Though maintaining he is innocent, Frink becomes evasive when Rube probes further. The narrative establishes themes of urban poverty, hidden secrets, and childhood independence amid criminal intrigue.
