Beadle's Half Dime Library No. 74

· December 24, 1878

This issue of Beadle's Half-Dime Library (Vol. III, No. 98, 1878) features "Hawkeye Harry, the Young Trapper Ranger" by Oll Coomes, a frontier adventure serial. The narrative opens in territorial Iowa, establishing Harry Houston as an eighteen-year-old trapper living in a fortified stone conical hut with his companion "Old Optic." When Harry discovers Indian tracks around his lake traps, he trails the party into the forest. At dusk, witnessing a mysterious black form rise from a creek and hearing a panther-like scream, Harry investigates. Later, from hiding, he observes a hooded, blanket-wrapped figure in yellow hair scalp a painted Sioux warrior with swift precision. The mysterious assailant, calling himself "the Unknown," takes a scalp for "vengeance," his voice oddly familiar to Harry. The narrative interweaves frontier danger, trapping survival, and mounting mystery.
