Beadle's Half Dime Library, No. 647

· December 17, 1889

This Beadle and Adams weekly (No. 647, Vol. XXV, 1889) contains a serial titled "Amateur Detective Against Professional: A Romance of the Circle of the Upper Ten" by J. C. Cowdrick. The narrative follows Jason Garretson, junior partner in a wholesale firm, and his friend Howell Boyden, a department superintendent falsely accused of theft. A detective plants silk stockings in Boyden's pocket to frame him for pilfering. Though initially pressured toward arrest, the partners allow Boyden to resign to preserve his reputation. Jason suspects an enemy within the store orchestrated the plot and promises to investigate. A secondary plotline involves Moses Garretson (Jason's father) pressuring his daughter Cleanthe to accept the suit of Louis Ellisdon, a senior partner, whom the father praises for magnanimity in the theft matter. Cleanthe resists, claiming she lacks love for Ellisdon.
