# The Cool Case

By Edward L. Wheeler, author of the "Deadwood Dick" novels and other western fiction, this detective serial opens in Boston. United States detective Richard Bristol—also known as Deadwood Dick, Junior—arrives at the Boston & Albany Depot investigating a mysterious case. He meets with William Donovan, a former clerk in the city recorder's office, to inquire about marriage licenses granted six years prior, specifically concerning Clarice Cool. Donovan reveals that Clarice married George Glenroy after meeting him at Martha's Vineyard, where Glenroy worked as a hotel clerk; Glenroy later acquired an "Honorable" title through prominent office.

Bristol meets with Cora Cool in a hotel room, learning her father has disappeared after arriving in Boston five weeks earlier with approximately ten thousand dollars. Her mother, Clarice, had abandoned the family six years ago taking valuable diamonds, including an inscribed gold ring worth one thousand dollars. Bristol undertakes to investigate the case while Cora remains hidden in Boston.
