This issue of Beadle's Half Dime Library contains the opening chapters of "The Underground Camp; A Romance of the Red River of the North" by Archie C. Irons. The narrative follows two boys, Albert Wington (twenty-one) and Fred Carter (sixteen), who are hunting along the Red River in Dakota territory when they witness a third companion, Ranty Hazelton, being pursued by Indians in a canoe. After Fred shoots and wounds an attacking Indian, the boys recover Ranty's abandoned canoe and paddle across the river to pursue their friend. They locate Ranty in the forest ahead, hearing commanding shouts and discovering a rocky precipice blocking their path forward. The serial depicts frontier adventure and hunting exploration complicated by Native American conflict.
