Beadle's Half Dime Library No. 471

· August 3, 1886

This issue of Deadwood Dick Jr's Corral by Edward L. Wheeler follows Old Avalanche, a weather-beaten frontier scout missing portions of his ears, escorting Miss Janet Earl through a canyon in Southern Idaho toward the mining town of Big Brace. Earl, an eighteen-year-old former Chicago nursemaid, travels to claim a fortune left by Hamilton Hinton, a mine-owner she once helped. Along the way, the trio—Old Avalanche, his horse Florence Night-in-a-gale, and his goat Jeremiah—are ambushed by the road-agent Dark Demming, who binds Avalanche to a tree. Jeremiah attacks Demming, causing his escape. A masked horseman then arrives, introduces himself as Deadwood Dick, Junior, a detective, and frees Avalanche. The narrative establishes a frontier adventure mixing comic tall-tales with genuine peril and introduces the masked hero character.
