# The Brothers League

This issue of Beadle and Adams' dime novel series features the opening chapters of "The Brothers League" by John W. Osbon, a frontier adventure serial set in the Idaho mining camp of Nowhar. The story centers on two physically identical giants of opposite coloring: the dark-haired Shasta Sam from Cinnabar and the blonde-haired Gold Gabe, the camp's alcalde. When Sam confronts Gabe claiming he murdered Sam's partner Monterey Merle five years earlier on the Stanislaus, tension escalates into violence. During their standoff, Gabe shoots Sam dead—though Julian St. Elmo, the proprietor of the Fair Play saloon, accuses the alcalde of being an assassin himself, claiming the fatal shot came from an unknown assailant in the darkness outside. Gabe denies involvement and offers a reward for the mysterious gunman's capture.
