This pulp western serial, "Glass-Eye, the Great Shot of the West" by Capt. J. F. C. Adams, opens with Rosa Beckwith, a young woman traveling with a wagon-train to Upper California, becoming lost on the prairie after riding ahead of her party. Pursued by a Sioux warrior who lassoes her, Rosa escapes when the Indian suddenly falls dead—apparently shot, though the shooter remains unknown. A mysterious white horseman subsequently appears on the prairie, approaching Rosa with rough frontier dialect and manner.
