# "A Young Sailor's Fight for Fortune"
By Col. Prentiss Ingraham, serialized in this October 13, 1885 issue (No. 429). A maritime romance of sea and shore. The narrative opens in colonial Long Island, where fourteen-year-old Duncan Dare confronts his schoolmaster, Silas Finn, over Finn's proposal to marry Duncan's widowed mother. Duncan refuses consent, having observed Finn's cruelty toward students and doubting his father's death at sea. The schoolmaster, a mysterious Englishman who survived a shipwreck decades earlier, threatens to become Duncan's stepfather regardless. The story flashes back to Duncan's parents' meeting: his mother Mary rescued his father Captain David Dare from a wrecked English warship, nursed him, and married him. Duncan's faith that his father yet lives contrasts with local belief that Captain Dare perished at sea over twelve years ago.
