Beadle's Half Dime Library, No. 322

· September 25, 1883

This issue of Beadle and Adams' weekly (Vol. XIII, No. 322, September 25, 1888) contains "Nemo, the Detective: Kit Kenyon's Vendetta" by Edward Willett. The serial opens with Jake Nemo, a physically distinctive short man with slight hump and considerable strength, discovering the deserted mining camp of Cacheton. Inside a white tenement, he finds Kit Kenyon—a fever-stricken former acquaintance—and Kenyon's dead wife, shot through the heart. Kenyon recounts that two men robbed and murdered her while he deliriously ill; Nemo deduces the criminals' identities through forensic observation: one wore a buckskin coat with brass buttons, one rode a sorrel horse with pale mane. The narrative shifts to a young man fishing near a mountain stream, awaiting a meeting with Clara Wynne, a teenage girl carrying a rifle, who reveals she lives nearby with her father Adam Wynne.
