The Gold-seeker Guide; or, The Lost Mountain is a serial adventure tale by Captain Mayne Reid, featured in Beadle and Adams' dime novel weekly (Vol. X, No. 239, 1883). The story follows a mining caravan in Sonora, Mexico, led by partners Don Estevan Villanueva and English investor Robert Tresillian, traveling toward the newly discovered Cerro Perdido gold mine. Their guide is Pedro Vicente, a professional prospector (gambusino) enriched by his strike. The caravan includes miners, teamsters, servants, and Villanueva's wife and daughter—traveling three days without water across drought-stricken plains. Upon sighting the mountain, spirits lift with hope of water and supplies. Meanwhile, a separate party approaches from the north: Coyotero Apaches, a warlike band of fifty-plus warriors marked by war paint and carrying modern weapons, also heading toward Cerro Perdido. The narrative sets up convergence between the civilian mining expedition and the indigenous war party.
