This issue of Beadle and Adams' weekly features "Panther Paul, the Prairie Pirate; or, Dainty Lance to the Rescue" by Joseph E. Badger, Jr., a Western outlaw serial. Panther Paul leads a band of prairie pirates infesting the California trail when a mysterious assassin called "Sure Death" begins systematically killing his men. Seven outlaws have died with no visible culprit, spawning superstitious terror in the band. When sentinel Bradford is shot on a cliff by a phantom-like figure with long hair, Panther Paul suspects the killer is mortal—possibly among his own men. Investigation reveals a woman's footprints. The outlaws pursue the fleeing rider across treacherous terrain in a desperate chase. A subplot involves Handsome Hal, a scarred gang member whose dead wife's apparition summoned the killer, hinting at supernatural revenge intertwined with the action narrative.
