# Daring Davy, the Young Bear Killer

This serial by Harry St. George, published in Beadle and Adams' weekly, features frontier adventure centered on Davy Crockett. The opening chapter introduces a "Death League"—four conspirators meeting in a hidden forest cabin: the giant Hercules Dan, Mose Martin (tarred and feathered), Dave Rawlings (a former circuit rider who lost a finger to Davy's rifle), and a mysterious man calling himself Squire Lawrence. Each recounts grievances against Crockett and swears to kill him, with Squire Lawrence offering gold as reward. Their plot is interrupted when Crockett, who had been eavesdropping on the cabin roof, crashes through and confronts them rifle in hand. The second chapter shifts to Rosebud Thornton, Crockett's betrothed, a fair-haired girl of fortune-fallen family. She encounters Barbara Warner, a dark-eyed heiress and apparent rival for Crockett's affections, who arrives seeking water and hints at hidden knowledge of their relationship.
