Beadle's Dime Novels No. 13

· 1860

This issue of Beadle's Biographical Library and Dime Novels contains two works. "The Life and Services of Paul Jones, the Revolutionary Naval Hero" by O. J. Victor presents a biography of the American naval officer, compiled with attention to his exploits during the Revolution and his service to colonial naval forces. Victor draws on earlier biographical work, including his "Life of Garibaldi." The second work, "Cedar Swamp; or, Wild Nat's Brigade" by William R. Eyster, is a historical fiction set during the American Revolution. The narrative follows Catherine Vale, a nineteen-year-old woman in the Carolinas, and her mother during the darkest period of the colonial struggle. When the patriot Nathaniel "Wild Nat" Ernshaw arrives to recruit Catherine's brother John for a militia brigade defending their region against British forces, he gains Mrs. Vale's approval despite her earlier reservations about his character. Meanwhile, the spy Timothy Turner tracks Nat's movements, harboring animosity toward him.
