The Argosy

This volume of The Argosy, edited by Mrs. Henry Wood (January–June 1877), contains diverse serial fiction and short stories. The lead serial "Gabriel's Appointment," by Ellen Edwards, follows young Alice Kerr, a destitute English artist traveling from Paris to London after her father's death. She is robbed at the Station du Nord and aided by an English gentleman, Mr. Bruce, and his companions Martin and Joel. The volume also features multiple short stories by "Johnny Ludlow" covering domestic mysteries and romance ("The Mystery at Number Seven," "Owen, the Milkman," "Helen Whitney's Wedding"), serialized travel narrative "Through Holland" by Charles W. Wood with illustrations, and "Katarina Orsini" by the author of East Lynne. Poetry contributions appear throughout, including work by Sydney Grey and E. Nesbit. The magazine emphasizes illustrated domestic narratives, serialized novels, and verse.
