The Argosy

· Founded 1865

This volume of The Argosy (July–December 1875), edited by Mrs. Henry Wood, contains multiple serials and short stories. The primary serial is "A Secret of the Sea" by the author of "In the Dead of Night," illustrated by Arthur Hopkins. This chapter shows Eleanor Lloyd pining for Gerald Pomeroy after a romantic encounter, later departing to visit Miss Lorrimore for five days; when she returns, Gerald has been sent to London on business for Sir Thomas. The issue also includes chapters from "Parkwater" by the author of "East Lynne," covering various domestic crises and suspenseful developments. "Johnny Ludlow's Papers" contributes a serial entry, "Chandler and Chandler." The volume features numerous shorter pieces: stories like "By Chance," "A Cipher Telegram," "The Princess of Condé," and "Ten Days at Sea"; poetry including "Eros," "Love and Death," and "Victor Hugo"; and articles on practical topics alongside domestic and sentimental narratives. Illustrations by Arthur Hopkins accompany the featured serial.
