Amazing Stories, Vol. 1, No. 1

The inaugural issue of Hugo Gernsback's Amazing Stories announced a new genre with characteristic audacity: a ringed planet—striped red, yellow, and green like a carnival globe—looms over an arctic icescape while a full-rigged sailing ship is caught in its gravitational ring, and fur-clad figures skate and scramble across the frozen foreground in apparent panic. The bold blue slab-serif logo crowds the yellow sky alongside the promise of stories by H. G. Wells, Jules Verne, and Edgar Allan Poe—science fiction's founding trinity deployed as literary credentials. Gernsback coined the term scientifiction here, and this cover established the template the pulps handed to comics: lurid painted spectacle, sensation over subtlety, genre as product. The artist has not been definitively identified.
