Published weekly, these wood-pulp periodicals serialized tales of athletic prowess, frontier survival, and athletic heroism that prefigured the adventure and action genres dominating twentieth-century popular entertainment. Lightfoot's resourcefulness against wild animals—a stock scenario of the era—promised readers the triumph of skill and courage against wilderness obstacles.
