Adventure Magazine Cover

· June 1, 1928

A dapper figure in a wide-brimmed hat and blue shirt smokes a cigarette, rendered in soft pastels against a bright yellow ground. A striped serape drapes across his shoulders. The cover announces "El Caballero" by Walt Coburn in bold red lettering. Published twice monthly at 25 cents, Adventure was a flagship pulp magazine that packaged exotic adventure and frontier tales for working-class readers. The genre-defining pulps of the 1920s and 30s relied on painted covers to signal genre and locale—here the Spanish Southwest—attracting readers through vivid imagery before interior illustration gave way to comic books' sequential narrative format.
