Adventure Magazine, October 3, 1919

· October 3, 1919

A diver plunges headfirst through underwater currents toward coral formations below, his muscular form silhouetted against a blue-green void dotted with bubbles. The composition captures the split-second of descent in dramatic foreshortening. Published twice monthly at twenty cents, Adventure epitomized the pulp magazine boom of the 1910s-20s, when illustrated covers in oil and gouache sold stories of exploration, danger, and exotic locales to working-class readers. These wood-pulp publications—named for their cheap newsprint stock—established the visual and narrative templates that comic books would later adopt: action-packed premises conveyed through dynamic figure illustration, bold typography, and genre specificity. Contributors listed include William Patterson White, Hugh Pendexter, and Robert J. Pearsall.
