Adventure Magazine Cover, April 3, 1918

· April 3, 1918

A figure in winter gear stands before a towering totem pole rendered in bold primary colors—red, blue, and yellow. The carved face features an enormous mouth with bared teeth, an unblinking eye, and stacked animal forms stacked vertically in the Northwest Coast style. The cover announces Adventure, a pulp weekly that sold for twenty cents and appeared twice monthly. These wood-pulp magazines trafficked in exotic locales and survival narratives, their painted covers advertising tales of exploration, danger, and adventure in remote territories. Adventure was among the most successful—running from 1910 to 1971—and established conventions that shaped the adventure and weird fiction genres that later fed into comic books and superhero narratives.
