Franklin's Miscellany

· August 24, 1839

This cover illustrates a woman kneeling beneath a weeping willow tree, contemplating a funerary monument dedicated to Lady Flora Hastings. The engraving depicts a sentimental Victorian scene—grief, remembrance, and domestic emotion rendered in the visual language of fine art. Yet this dignified image appeared in a penny publication, the serialized periodical that brought sensation, melodrama, and scandal to working-class readers at affordable prices. Such cheap weeklies fed Victorian appetites for crime, horror, and emotional extremes, combining woodcut illustrations with serialized fiction. Though often dismissed by educated elites, these publications established the template for modern comics: episodic narrative, visual storytelling, and mass accessibility that would eventually evolve into the comic book medium.
