The American Text Book of Practical and Scientific Agriculture
Fox, Charles, 1815-1854 · 1854
This is not a Victorian penny dreadful but a textbook. The OCR captures the title page, dedication, and preface of A Treatise on Practical and Scientific Agriculture, by Charles Fox, published in Detroit in 1854. The volume is an educational text designed for collegiate classes, agricultural schools, and farmers, combining theoretical and practical instruction. Fox, a lecturer at the University of Michigan and editor of the Farmer's Companion, explains that he compiled the work because no suitable textbook existed that integrated science with practical farming methods. The book treats topics including field cultivation, crop production, livestock, and related scientific principles drawn from over one hundred sources. Material is printed in three type sizes to serve different student levels. Fox intended to address domestic animals and other topics in future volumes.
