# Museum Catalog Note
This is the first volume of Memorials and Correspondence of Charles James Fox, edited by Lord John Russell and published in 1853 by Richard Bentley. The work compiles letters, documents, and annotations concerning the 18th-century Whig politician Charles James Fox (1749–1806), covering his family background, political career, and private life organized chronologically from his birth through his death. Lord Holland began the project but left it incomplete; John Russell completed the publication using Holland's notes alongside new editorial apparatus by Mr. Allen. The volume includes biographical sketches of Fox's ancestors, notably Sir Stephen Fox (born 1627), a court figure under Charles II known for his integrity and business acumen. Extensive correspondence, particularly Fox's literary letters to Lord Holland (1790–1805) discussing classical texts and poetry, forms the work's core material, supplemented by historical context illuminating parliamentary events and political figures of Fox's era.
