Fox, Charles James, 1749-1806 · c. 1850s
This is a biographical and historical compilation rather than a penny dreadful. Edited by Lord John Russell, this 1853 publication comprises memorials and correspondence of Charles James Fox, the 18th-century Whig politician. The work collects letters and documents relating to Fox's life from his family background through his political career (1770-1806), including his opposition to the American and French wars, his leadership of the Whig party, and his literary interests, particularly in Greek and Italian poetry. The edition draws on materials originally assembled by Lord Holland, Fox's nephew, with additional editorial work by Mr. Allen and Russell. Letters between Fox and Lord Holland (1790-1805) receive particular emphasis. The project organizes Fox's papers into seven chronological periods to serve as biographical materials for future historians.
