This issue of the Cosmopolitan Art Journal contains scholarly and literary content rather than fiction. The lead article, "The Progress of the English Language," traces linguistic evolution through eleven versions of the Lord's Prayer, beginning with a Gothic translation from A.D. 360 and proceeding through Anglo-Saxon variants (875–900), Early English (1160–1300), Wyclif's version (1370), and concluding with Tindal's 1526 translation. The piece demonstrates incremental changes in vocabulary and syntax across centuries. A second section, "A String of Pearls," presents three sonnets: one by contributor A. P. C. meditating on ten years of idle repose and dreams; one by M. L. S. addressing her study with imagery of sunset and flowers; and a passage from poet Crabbe comparing library arrangement to social hierarchy. The material is literary criticism and poetry rather than narrative fiction.
