History of the Old Township of Dunstable
Fox, Charles J. (Charles James), 1811-1846 · 1846
This is not a Victorian penny dreadful but a historical monograph. The work is Charles J. Fox's History of the Old Township of Dunstable, published posthumously in 1846 in Nashua, New Hampshire. Fox, a lawyer and legislator who died in 1846, compiled a detailed account of the original settlement and development of Dunstable township and its constituent towns (Nashua, Hollis, Hudson, Litchfield, and Merrimac, New Hampshire; Dunstable and Tyngsborough, Massachusetts) from colonial foundations through 1741. The history chronicles early settlement patterns, interactions with Native American tribes including Passaconoway and Wannalancet, King Philip's War and subsequent Indian conflicts, ecclesiastical history, and civil administrative records. It incorporates primary source documents, town meeting records, and period details regarding fortifications, military expeditions (including Lovewell's Fight), religious ministry, and economic conditions.
