History of the Old Township of Dunstable

Fox, Charles J. (Charles James), 1811-1846 · 1846

This is not a Victorian penny dreadful, but a regional historical monograph. The volume is Charles J. Fox's History of the Old Township of Dunstable, published posthumously in 1846 by the Nashua publisher Charles T. Gill. Fox died in February 1846 while revising the manuscript for publication. The work documents the founding and early settlement of Dunstable township (encompassing present-day Nashua, Ashville, Hollis, Hudson, Litchfield, and Merrimac in New Hampshire, and Dunstable and Tyngsborough in Massachusetts). Contents include chapters on the earliest settlers, King Philip's War and subsequent Indian conflicts, ecclesiastical history including early ministers, local military engagements including Lovewell's Fight (1725), and civil governance through 1741. The narrative incorporates primary documents, town records, and contemporary accounts of frontier warfare and colonial administration.
