This volume combines two historical works. "History of the Counter-Revolution in England" by Armand Carrel treats the period following the Restoration of Charles II and James II's reign, while "History of the Reign of James II" is by Charles James Fox.
The bound-in memoir of Armand Carrel (1800–1836) traces his political and literary trajectory: initially a sub-lieutenant who resigned from the French army in 1823 to fight with Spanish constitutionalists against the Bourbon intervention, he was later condemned by French military courts for bearing arms abroad. After acquittal, unable to pursue law due to lack of credentials, Carrel became secretary to historian Augustin Thierry, assisting with research on Histoire de la Conquête d'Angleterre par les Normans. The memoir breaks off mid-sentence discussing Carrel's commission to write a history of Scotland.
