This volume contains theological works by the Puritan divine Thomas Brooks, edited by Alexander Balloch Grosart. Volume I includes three treatises: Precious Remedies Against Satan's Devices, a systematic examination of Satan's twelve strategies for drawing souls to sin and eight devices for deterring them from religious duties; Apples of Gold for Young Men and Women; and The Mute Christian Under the Smarting Rod—A String of Pearls. The first treatise further addresses Satan's devices for maintaining doubt and despair, destroying various ranks of men (the great, the learned, saints, and the ignorant), and preventing belief in Christ, each accompanied by prescribed spiritual remedies. Brooks' biographical memoir and editorial apparatus precede the treatises.
