Complete Works of Thomas Brooks

Brooks, Thomas, 1608-1680 · 1circa 1866 (reprint edition)

This is not a penny dreadful. The OCR text describes the title page and editorial materials from Volume VI of "The Complete Works of Thomas Brooks," a 19th-century scholarly edition published in 1867 by James Nichol and James Nisbet. The contents are theological writings by Thomas Brooks, a 17th-century Puritan divine. The volume contains six longer works: "London's Lamentations on the late fiery dispensation" (addressing the 1666 Great Fire of London), "The Glorious Day of the Saints' Appearance," "God's Delight in the Progress of the Upright," "Hypocrites Detected," "A Believer's Last Day his Best Day," "A Heavenly Cordial," and "The Legacy of a Dying Mother" (including Mrs. Bell's spiritual experiences). The editorial postscript discusses Brooks's homiletic style—his use of metaphor, anecdote, and appeals to emotion—and addresses contemporary Puritan preaching techniques. Extensive indices provide scholarly apparatus for theological and moral observations.
