Captain James Cook, F.R.S.

Anderson, G. W. (George William) · 1784

This is a prospectus and introductory material for a serialized publication of Captain Cook's voyages. The work presents a comprehensive account of Cook's three voyages undertaken by royal authority between 1768 and 1780: the first aboard the Endeavour exploring the Southern Hemisphere; the second in the Resolution and Adventure toward the South Pole; and the third in the Resolution and Discovery to the Pacific Ocean, during which Cook was killed by inhabitants of Hawaii in February 1779. The publication includes narratives from Cook's principal assistants—Sir Joseph Banks, Dr. Solander, and others—and incorporates accounts of other circumnavigators including Byron, Carteret, and Anson. Supplementary travel narratives cover journeys by Hanway, Dalrymple, Carver, and numerous other explorers. The edition features over two hundred copper-plate engravings, maps, and charts. Published in eighty sixpenny numbers by Alexander Hogg under the direction of George William Anderson, the work aims to make Cook's discoveries accessible to readers of modest means.
