The Speeches of the Right Honourable Charles James Fox

Fox, Charles James, 1749-1806 · 1853

# Museum Catalog Entry: The Speeches of the Right Honourable Charles James Fox

This third edition (1853), edited by a barrister, collects Fox's parliamentary speeches spanning from 1770 to 1806, documenting his major legislative engagements. The volume includes his interventions on press liberty (1770–1771), bills concerning sedition and treason during the American crisis (1777–1778), motions on naval appointments and American independence (1778–1779), economical reform and Irish discontents (1779), and his appointment of Hugh Palliser to Greenwich Hospital (1781). Major content addresses Fox's East India Bill (1783), competition with Pitt's alternative bill (1784), the Westminster Scrutiny election dispute (1784), and the Regency Crisis (1788). Later speeches concern the slave trade abolition (1791, 1792), the Quebec Bill, Test Act repeal, his Libel Bill, the Treason and Sedition Bills (1795), and the French wars (1793–1806). A biographical memoir precedes the speeches.
