Bonny Jean, and A Severe Threat
[Sharkey, Emma Augusta (Brown) Mrs.], 1858- [from old catalog] · 1887
This double number from Street & Smith's Select Series (November 1887) contains two stories by Mrs. E. Burke Collins.
"Bonny Jean" opens in the Louisiana pine forests along the Tangipahoa River, where the dying timber-man David Conway lies in his log cabin. As his family delays arrival, Conway reveals a closely guarded secret to the gentleman Philip Randall, who loves Conway's daughter Jean: Conway's father once saved the pirate Jean Lafitte from Indians, and Lafitte repaid the debt by leaving a chest of gold and jewels buried somewhere on the riverbanks. Conway extracts promises that Randall will care for his wife and daughter and recover the treasure. Meanwhile, the unscrupulous Gabriel Black—who has lingered nearby—witnesses Conway sign a mysterious document, using rough laborers as witnesses. The narrative centers on death-bed revelations, family obligation, and hidden treasure in ante-bellum Louisiana.
"A Severe Threat" is also by Collins, though its content cannot be determined from the OCR scan provided.
