Pigs' Meat; or, Lessons for the Swinish Multitude

· 1794

This issue of Pigs' Meat; or, Lessons for the Swinish Multitude, published by T. Spence at the Hive of Liberty, contains political essays aimed at working people. The lead selection, "The Right and Capacity of the People to Judge of Government," excerpted from Cato's Letters, argues that ordinary citizens must understand government affairs, as these directly affect their virtue, property, and security. The author contends that private men have every right to concern themselves with governance, refuting the claim that such matters are not their business. Using historical examples—Cincinnatus, ancient Greece and Rome, and modern Ottoman-ruled Greece—the text demonstrates how good government produces virtue and prosperity, while tyranny breeds misery and degradation. The volume also includes an opening verse poem, "Alteration," celebrating liberation from chains and the dawn of reform. OCR quality degrades significantly in later pages, preventing complete recovery of additional content.
