Juan Giménez
1943–2020
Juan Antonio Giménez López was born on 26 November 1943 in Argentina and died on 2 April 2020. He is best remembered as a comic book artist and writer whose work is defined by a precise, mechanical aesthetic—intricate machinery rendered with architectural clarity. Giménez began his career in the late 1970s, contributing to the French anthology *Métal Hurlant* and the Argentine magazine *L'Eternauta*, where his detailed style found a natural home in science fiction. His most enduring collaboration was with filmmaker and writer Alejandro Jodorowsky, with whom he co-created *The Metabarons*, a sprawling space opera series that became his signature work. As artist, colorist, inker, and sometimes writer across 142 issues from 1978 to 2019, Giménez brought a cold, gleaming beauty to the saga of a warrior dynasty. His visual language—all sleek hulls, intricate weaponry, and biomechanical forms—set him apart in European and Argentine comics. Though he never sought the spotlight, his influence on science fiction comics is quiet but deep, and his work on *The Metabarons* remains a touchstone for fans of elaborate world-building.
