Gérald Forton
Gérald Forton was a Belgian-born French comic book artist, best known for his clean, dynamic line work on adventure and Western titles. He was born on 10 April 1931 in Belgium and died on 16 December 2021. The grandson of Louis Forton, creator of the classic French comic *Les Pieds Nickelés*, Forton grew up immersed in the medium. He entered comics professionally in the 1950s, and over a career spanning from 1955 to 2012, he contributed to dozens of series as an artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and occasional writer.
Forton’s signature style—clear, expressive, and well-suited to both action and humor—made him a sought-after collaborator. He worked extensively with writer Jean-Michel Charlier on the Western *Teddy Ted* and the adventure series *Kim Devil*, and with Henri Vernes on the long-running *Bob Morane*. In the 1980s, he drew several issues of DC Comics’ *Jonah Hex*, bringing his European flair to the American Western genre. He also illustrated the war series *Team Yankee* and the fantasy series *Sensei*.
Forton’s later years saw him continue to work in the industry, though at a slower pace. He received no major awards widely noted in English-language sources, but his steady, professional output across decades earned him respect among peers and readers. His legacy is that of a versatile craftsman who bridged European and American comic traditions.
