Fil Barlow
1963–
Fil Barlow, born 8 April 1963, is an Australian artist, cartoonist, writer, and production designer now based in Los Angeles. He is best known for creating the science-fiction comic *Zooniverse*, which he wrote, drew, and lettered for its 1986–87 run. Barlow’s path into comics began in the mid-1980s, and his distinctive, detailed linework and imaginative creature designs quickly set him apart. His signature style blends whimsical biology with intricate alien landscapes, a look he honed across his own series and later contributions to anthologies like *8House* and *Island*. Though *Zooniverse* remains his most prominent co-creation, Barlow’s credits as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer span from 1984 to 2016, with ten issues in our catalog. After his early comics work, he transitioned into animation and production design, applying his visual storytelling to film and television. Barlow’s legacy lies in his singular vision of a quirky, fully realized universe, which has earned him a dedicated following among fans of independent sci-fi. He has not received major industry awards, but his influence is felt in the offbeat, creator-owned comics that followed his lead.
