David Scroggy
David Scroggy (born December 19, 1951, in Akron, Ohio) is best known for his long tenure as head of new product development at Dark Horse Comics, a role he held from 1993 to 2017. After moving from Ohio to San Diego, he began his comics career in 1975 as a volunteer for San Diego Comic-Con, encouraged by organizer Shel Dorf. Dorf helped him land a column in *The Buyer's Guide to Comics Fandom*, which led to a job at Pacific Comics, where he rose to general manager of its four San Diego stores. In 1977, he received an Inkpot Award for his industry work.
When Pacific Comics expanded into publishing, Scroggy became editorial director in 1981, editing Jack Kirby’s *Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers* and the anthology *Vanguard Illustrated*. He also recruited Steve Ditko for the publisher. He selected artists and wrote biographies for *The Portfolio of Underground Art* (1980), a limited-edition set featuring underground comix creators like Robert Crumb and S. Clay Wilson. His writing credits include *Pacific Presents*, *Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight*, and *Dark Horse Extra*. Through *Vanguard Illustrated*, he helped launch the careers of writers Fabian Nicieza, Joey Cavalieri, and David Campiti. Scroggy’s legacy lies in his quiet, steady shaping of comics retail and publishing from the 1970s onward.
