André Juillard
1948–2024
André Juillard (9 June 1948 – 31 July 2024) was a French comics artist celebrated for his elegant, historically rich ligne claire style. He is best known as the co-creator of the swashbuckling series *Les 7 vies de l'Épervier* (The 7 Lives of the Falcon) with writer Patrick Cothias, and for his acclaimed work on the *Blake and Mortimer* series, taking over art from the late Edgar P. Jacobs. Born in Paris, Juillard studied at the École des Beaux-Arts before entering comics in the late 1970s. His meticulous draftsmanship and atmospheric coloring brought a painterly depth to historical adventure, notably in the *Arno* series and the *Blake and Mortimer* album *The Oath of the Five Lords*. He collaborated frequently with Cothias and later with Yves Sente on *Blake and Mortimer*. Juillard's contributions earned him multiple awards, including the Grand Prix de la Ville d'Angoulême in 1996. He continued working until his death in 2024, leaving a legacy as a master of classical European bande dessinée.
