John Wagner, born John Alexander Wagner in 1949 in the United States, is a British comics writer who, alongside Pat Mills, reshaped the British comics landscape starting in the 1970s. He began his career in editorial at D. C. Thomson & Co. in the late 1960s before moving to freelance writing and a staff editor role at IPC the following decade. Wagner is best known for his work in boys' adventure comics, notably co-creating the character Judge Dredd with artist Carlos Ezquerra. He helped launch *Battle Picture Weekly* in 1975, writing "Darkie's Mob," and *2000 AD* in 1977, where he created numerous series including *Strontium Dog*, *Robo-Hunter*, and *Button Man*. In the 1980s, he and co-writer Alan Grant wrote extensively for IPC titles and DC Comics' *Batman*, producing a series of Batman and Judge Dredd team-up comics and the independent comic *The Bogie Man*. Judge Dredd has been adapted into two films, and David Cronenberg adapted Wagner's graphic novel *A History of Violence* into the 2005 film. Wagner continues to write for *2000 AD* and *Judge Dredd Megazine*.
