José Luis Munuera
b. 1972
José Luis Munuera was born on 21 April 1972 in Lorca, in the Murcia region of Spain. He is best known as the artist who, alongside writer Jean-David Morvan, helmed the classic *Spirou et Fantasio* series from 2004 to 2008. Their run on the beloved franchise honored the spirit of André Franquin’s original work while introducing a subtle manga-inspired modernism. The duo wove in background elements and secondary characters from the strip’s entire history, not just Franquin’s era. Munuera also drew the children’s series *Nävis*, a spin-off of Philippe Buchet’s science-fiction saga *Wake*. His career in comics began in the late 1990s, with credits as artist, colorist, inker, and writer on 21 issues between 1997 and 2026. His most frequently cited titles include *Los Campbell*, *Spirou + Fantasio*, *Merlin*, *Een hart van schroot*, *Die Campbells*, and *Walt Disney Mickey All-Stars*. Munuera’s style is notable for its clean, expressive linework and dynamic storytelling, blending European bande dessinée tradition with a contemporary flair. He remains active in the industry, contributing to both Spanish and international markets.
